SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF AMRIK AND SURINDER NIJJAR

“As long as there is love and memory, there is no true loss”

mom and dad

Dr. Banwait will be providing a $500 scholarship to a student graduating from grade 12. The deadline for the application is May 31 of each school year.

“I am forever thankful for all the opportunities that I have had because of the sacrifices my parents made in their lives. They left behind their own homes, family and friends to come to Canada so their children would have a better future. My parents inspired me in many different ways to become the person I am.  My mother gave me strength to overcome obstacles no matter how big or small. Her ability to smile and enjoy the small moments in life, despite being in a wheelchair, will be something that I will always remember.  My father passed on his strong work ethic, his love for education and learning to me.  Education has become a cornerstone of my life and my love of learning continues to this day thanks to my dad.”- Dr. Datinder Banwait

You will be required to provide a response (approximately 500 words) on the application.  The successful candidate will show commitment to pursuing further post-secondary education.

As an Afghan immigrant, Zahra witnessed firsthand how education is a privilege many girls are denied.
Growing up in Canada, she has embraced every opportunity to learn and grow, especially after hearing her cousins’ stories back home.
Their experiences strengthened her dream of becoming a surgeon and using education to make a difference.
This fall, she will begin the next chapter of her journey at Simon Fraser University.
