Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is an effective treatment for chronic pain of neuropathic origin. This technique uses needles similar to the needles used in acupuncture to find and diagnose muscle shortening in deep muscles. Our physiotherapist will determine if this technique is something that would work well in your treatment plan.
Neuropathic pain occurs when nerves are not functioning properly after an injury. When the nerves do not function properly there is a response by local muscles. These local muscles respond by contracting (shortening), and normal blood circulation to the area is reduced. This muscle shortening places pressure on the nerves and can cause compression of the joints crossed by the affected muscles. The result is pain and muscle tension. IMS is very effective for releasing shortened muscles under contracture. This release will impact the muscles that are pulling on surrounding structures.
IMS is commonly used to treat neck, low back and a variety of other conditions including: plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, headaches, shoulder injuries and much more.
